Bed Bugs, Cockroaches, Mice and Rats.
Here are some interesting facts from Essex Pest Control and Bird Control about all things bed bugs, cockroaches, rats and mice and pest control.
Rodents
- Black rats – Rattus rattus and Brown rats – Rattus norvegicus.
- Mice can jump up to 12 inches vertically.
- Rats can jump up to 30 inches.
- Female mice can start breeding at 2 months old, and have babies up to ten times a year.
- Female mice can have anything up to 12 babies in 3 weeks.
- Mice are nocturnal and are also omnivores, they will eat anything.
- Mice show no dislike to new items, where as Rats are scared of new items, known as Neophobia.
- Mice are very clean.
- Mice will play dead if threatened and cannot escape quickly.
- Rats carry diseases such as Thphus and Salmonellosis.
- Rodent incisors grow non stop.
Insects
- Bed bugs feed solely on the blood of animals.
- There are over 90 known species.
- Bed bugs are flat and oval, reddish brown in colour and grow to 4-5mm.
- Bed bugs feed for a period of about 5 – 6 minutes.
- Bed bugs seek blood every 5-10 days.
- A female bed bug can lay up to 500 eggs in her life time.
- German Cockroches will eat almost anything.
- German Cockroaches will produce one egg every 25 days and each egg can have up to 40 nymphs.
- These cockroaches are fast, small and can spread through buildings fast.
- They are cannibals and will eat their own dead.
- They like warm humid conditions and will infest electronic appliances, boilers, kitchens.
